I just got back from Jeff Merkley's town hall event at Park Rose high school in Portland. I fell as though I need to go take a shower to wash all the filth off that I was surrounded by at this event.
The first bad sign was the protesters standing at the entrance carrying Free Gaza and Israel is a terrorist state signs. After waiting 30 minutes past the start time, I then began to see these same people come into the meeting area.
You were given a ticket to speak or ask a question. The anti-Israel people seemed to be in force. Spewing their hatred for our democratic ally in the Middle East, Merkley was besieged with questions about US support of Israel. I think even he was caught off guard. He kept calling for an "investigation" into the flotilla "massacre" to the boos of his Portland base.
The other questions came from transportation "advocates", clean water "advocates", and other "environmental" zealots. All of them asking for more federal handouts for their pet causes.
I got so disgusted with listening to these very ill-informed Hamas loving, save Gaza folks that I had to walk out.
During the time I was there (45 minutes) listening to this venom, there was not one question or objection raised about: Debt and spending; constitutionality of Obamacare; bailouts; federal stimulus money. There was one question raised about illegal aliens and funding for border protection. Merkley will be getting behind the "comprehensive immigration reform" efforts - gee what a surprise.
Though not surprised, I was embarassed to be in that room. It spoke volumes about the kind of politics that Portland engages in. These people couldn't care less about how big or how much money this government spends. They could care less about the borders and security of this country. They throw their support behind people who are the most religious intolerant people on the planet - as they pat themselves on the backs about being so "tolerant".
It is as disgusting as we all believe it to be.
I think I will go take that shower now.
