Jeff Reynolds for Metro

Fellow Conservatives,

Republicans are beginning to awaken from a long, deep slumber.  As Allen Alley, Chris Dudley and John Lim work to turn out their supporters, we need to ensure that our message is in the mix.  We need Republicans to be aware of how important this Metro election is and to know that a Republican is running for Metro in EastCounty.

Especially this year, I want to maximize the Conservative vote this primary election.  I firmly believe that 2010 is our year to take our country back, and that we as Conservatives must do so AT ALL LEVELS OF GOVERNMENT.  And make no mistake - WITH YOUR HELP, I CAN WIN IN THE PRIMARY ON MAY 18.

Metro District #1 is the East Multnomah County and North Clackamas County seat.  Because it overlaps a number of State House Districts it has less of a registration gap than other races, which should give all Conservatives and Republicans the understanding that this seat is winnable.

We have already canvassed thousands of Republican doors and we have many more to reach before ballots drop this Friday.  From Happy Valley to Sandy, Troutdale to DamascusMaywood Park to Boring, we have a shared responsibility to keep the government living within its means.  This includes Metro.  There’s simply no good reason for Metro to be the size it is with the scope it has.  We need someone on Metro who will stand up and ask fundamental questions.

What is Metro?

Metro Regional Government is an elective body which administers the Urban Growth Boundary, as well as the garbage hauling and recycling contracts in Washington, Multnomah and Clackamas Counties. Metro is the pass-through agency for all federal transportation funds in the region, and advocates the expansion of MAX light rail throughout the tri-county area. In addition, Metro is charged with administering Oregon Zoo and Oregon Convention Center. Perhaps its most far-reaching function, however, is in land use planning. Metro has come up with the 2040 Growth Concept – a long range plan for land use decisions, which can be found on their website

Why is Jeff Reynolds running for Metro?

I have watched as the Portland Metro Region has grown in population, but not in effective infrastructure. Commuting from East County to the Lloyd District every day has given me an appreciation for what’s gone right, and what hasn’t, with the centralized planning of Metro.

As I’ve spoken to voters all across the district, I’ve heard a common refrain: Metro is completely disconnected from the voters it purports to serve.  Whether it’s centralized planning that imposes Portland-style development on the suburbs and farm land, the inability to deal with the burdensome regulatory environment of Metro, or the undermining of property rights for land owners, the message is the same.

I hear stories every day from businesses trying to keep their doors open, and families trying to decide which bills get paid.  I firmly understand why limited government and personal liberty are the guiding principles which work best in our society.  This election requires Republicans to stand up and be counted.

This primary election is about choice.  A choice between the status quo of a Metro government that has become disconnected from the needs and desires of the region it governs, or a new approach that is focused on a more constrained, accessible and responsive Metro.

Has your commute gotten easier, or are you spending more time each day in your car away from your family?  With Metro’s reliance on mass transit planning, are we sacrificing the effective transport of commercial goods? In this recession, how are we fostering new business growth in the Metro Region?

As your Metro Councilor, I will dedicate myself to:

• Maintaining local control in land use decisions because local governments are closer to

the people they govern and more likely to respect the rights of property owners

• Creating a first-class transportation system for families AND for businesses

• Reducing imported crime along the MAX lines

How can you help?

By contacting my campaign so that when I win I can ask the Metro Councilors all of the questions that working Oregonians have.

If you feel the same disconnect between Metro land use planners and the families and businesses that live in our community, then I need your vote.  If you want to help all Republican candidates reach as many Republican households as possible, then I need your help to spread our campaign’s message.  Remember, this election year is our year.

We will be canvassing Republican doors till Election Day.  We will carry Republican literature to Republican primary voters.  We need Republicans to vote a straight Republican ticket this May. THIS INCLUDES NON-PARTISAN RACES.  If this happens, if Republicans turnout, we will put a Republican on Metro Council, and we will begin to take back all levels of government from the centralized control of the Statists.

I can't express in words the level of my gratitude and humility.

Thank you so much for your support,

Jeff Reynolds
